Well, we have a little experimental family garden in our back yard Thanks to my green thumb of a hubby! It all started by accident a couple years back where we ended up lazily tossing the rotting jack o lanterns and their pumpkin guts in the corner of our yard! We didn't think anything of it till the next spring when we had some kind of plant growing in the corner. My hubby recognized it was from our fall project with the kids. He decided to leave it. It grew and grew, he watered it and nurtured it. The children even got in on the fun outdoor learning! Our four children! Yes, Bella Kate Will and Ben! ranging from 11-3 this year, got in on the morning routine of checking on their pumpkin plants and counting all of the little starter gourds. Once school was back in session from summer break we kept up the tradition of going out in the morning avoiding the bees and counting our growing "baby plants"
Those round green balls sure did feel like babies too with all the care we put into them and when one would rot it was devastating for the first few times. The children realized their would now be one less pumpkin in their home grown patch. Over the fence it went to the open field behind out house and we refocused on the few others that were making it. By the very end of October we had four pumpkins that came out of that green not to mention all of the fun picture and the science talk we spoke of because of this accidental garden!
So this year we wanted to try and see what else we could grow and decided to try adding cucumbers, summer squash, basil, cilantro, tomatoes, cantaloupe! Well these are all the things that took from seeds. The cucumbers have been the most prosperous and we have had our fill of them for sure! So the Summer of the Cucumber is beginning to make sense.
Now listen, I, do not grow things, well... babies apparently. I can do that Well, almost without trying. plants are NOT included on that list so i knew if we were going to actually try and do any type of garden it would have to be my husbands doing.
Ladies, marriage is an adventure and this is one thing in the 9 years I've been married i did not know my husband could do!
